Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy is a treatment that uses a pet’s own blood components to promote a healing response in damaged tissues.
Conditions that are commonly treated with ACP therapy include:
- Ligament tears
- Muscle injuries
- Tendon tears
- Other wounds
After a tissue is injured or damaged, the body uses specialized proteins in the injured area to promote effective repair. Many of these proteins come from components of the blood called “platelets.” These platelets release growth factors at the site of injury to begin the healing process.
In Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy, a blood product called plasma is created from a sample of a patient’s own blood. This plasma is a concentrated solution of the healing platelets and growth factors – it’s like a super charged version of what the body would naturally use to heal itself! The specific process we use at Your Pet’s Wellness is also known as Autologous Conditioned Plasma. After creating the plasma, a Your Pet’s Wellness veterinarian then injects it directly into the injured muscle, tendon, ligament, joint, or wound. For your pet’s comfort, the injections are typically done under light sedation. This entire process can take as little as 20-30 minutes.
